Exploring human landscapes both urban and rural, photo artist Stuart James seeks to create photographic art inspired by the paintings of the impressionists, and by the literature of the romantic period. With an eye to capturing an honest emotional response to our world, our place in it, and the profound impression it leaves on our psyches, the photographs are expressions of the enduring sensory memory of that moment, that day, this life that all humans experience.

The style and technique are intended to capture the overall sense of the moment rather than the trying to show the actuality. Soft focus, strong colours, and blended tones turn an ordinary moment into a lasting and tangible impression that serves to express one’s place in this world.

Stuart James is a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. Much of his photographic work represents his exploration of his city, but his travels overseas are well represented by collections of his experiences there.
