Various venues will be used to display photographs around Winnipeg and possibly other Manitoba locations. These venues will be galleries large and small, cafes, restaurants, museums, retail stores and any other suitable public space. These venues will be open during normal business hours throughout the month of October and will hopefully encourage the public to explore places in Winnipeg that they may not have entered before. All of the participating venues will be published in a map online and in the official program. Similar to the CONTACT photo fest in Toronto every May, each photographer is responsible for finding and setting up a venue for their photography. This works very well in that city and creates an adventurous "scavenger hunt" zeitgeist where people seek out the art and find themselves in new parts of the city and going into places they don't normally go. The venue and the photographer will naturally make a good fit for each other, as any venue is allowed to refuse to hang any photography that it does not like.
A $150 submission fee is required from all photographers. This fee may be split accordingly for group shows. A photographer and the venue may also wish to split the cost of the fee. The photographer must have a secure venue at the time of applying to the festival.
Accepted photographers will receive promotion in the printed program, on the website, and on the FLASH Instagram account @flashphotofest
Any Manitoban Photographer can have a short Bio and up to three samples of their work hosted on the FLASH website for FREE.
There is no jury that will accept or reject applications. As long as the fee is paid and the venue secured before the deadline of January 15, 2020 any photographer may be part of the festival.
As with the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, some of the content will be G rated, while some may be PG-13 or R rated. Finding an appropriate venue for a show is up to the individual photographer and the owner/manager of the proposed venue.
Any photographic art sold during the festival will NOT have a percentage commission taken by the festival. It is strongly encouraged that 100% of the price of any art sold during the festival go to the artist and not have the venue take a percentage.
